Men's Track Wins CCSU Meet
The men's track and field team won CCSU's first track meet on campus since the early 1970s.
The Central Connecticut men's track and field team opened its outdoor season with a win on Saturday in CCSU's first meet on the campus in New Britain, CT since the early 1970s. Freshman Colin Sauter kicked off the historic event with a USATF Jr. Championship qualifying performance of 32:08.55 in the 10,000m.
In addition to Sauter's win, the Blue Devils posted several other gold-medal performances, including two from sophomore Kendall Walker. Walker claimed the title in both the 100 and 200 meter dash events, crossing the finish line in 11.02 and 22.55 seconds, respectively.
In the 200m, Walker was followed by juniors Jamie Tobias and Chris Savvidou who finished back-to-back in third and fourth with times of 23.22 and 23.23, respectively.
Junior Jamal Fruster had an impressive showing in the 400m dash, crossing the finish line first in 49.18 seconds. The Blue Devils finished one-two-three in the event with freshman Tommy Pytel (50.68) and Savvidou (51.14) taking the other podium spots.
Senior Craig Hunt topped the 5,000m field with his time of 14:57.00 and was the only runner to finish under the 15-minute mark. Junior Patrick Hubbell came in second in the event, crossing the line in 15:17.00.
In the 4x400m relay, CCSU claimed first and third with times of 3:25.60 and 3:39.68. The first squad consisted of Fruster, junior Ryan Budd, sophomore Malcolm Connor and freshman Zach Andrews while the second was made up of Pytel, junior Joey Farrington and freshmen Jamil Ferguson and David Gomes.
Farrington also performed well in the 800m run, coming in second in a field of 21 runners. The junior finished the race in a time of 1:59.10. Ferguson also raced the 800m, placing 13th in the field in 2:04.25.
In the field events, Tobias took the high jump title, clearing a height of 1.95 meters and was followed by freshman Malik Gordon in third with 1.85m.
Junior Michael Ficorilli finished fifth in the shot put (12.98m) and sixth in the discus (38.04m) while freshman Jeremy Willis earned fourth in his first career outdoor meet in the javelin. Willis threw for 52.26 meters.
The Blue Devils are scheduled to continue outdoor competition at Monmouth on March, 29.
