Harry Glynne and J.P. Sportman Win NEC Awards
Senior right hander Harry Glynne and sophomore outfielder J.P. Sportman were named the Northeast Conference baseball Pitcher and Player of the Week, it was announced on Monday by the league office. The Blue Devils swept Mount St. Mary's in a weekend NEC series, and claimed the #3 seed in this week's NEC Baseball Tournament.
Sportman spearheaded an offensive attack that plated 48 runs in four games and helped the Blue Devils secure a NEC Tournament berth for the seventh straight season. The sophomore outfielder produced multiple hits and batted in at least one run in each of Central Connecticut's four NEC games against Mount St. Mary's. He batted .667 (12-for-18) with nine runs scored and seven RBI during the four-game sweep that moved Central into a tie for third place in the final NEC regular season standings.
Sportman's 12 hits were four more than any other NEC player had during the last weekend of league play. Sportman wasted no time in staking the Blue Devils' to an early lead in the series opener. He blasted his seventh home run of the season, a two-run shot, three batters into Game 1 and finished the eventual 9-0 win by going 3-for-5 with two runs and three RBI. Sportman connected on two base-knocks, including a fifth-inning, run-scoring single, in Game 2, an eventual 6-5 triumph for CCSU.
He reached base safely in all five of his plate appearances in Game 3, going 4-for-4 with a walk, four runs, and four RBI. The 5-foot-9 outfielder produced a 3-for-5 showing with three runs scored and two RBI in the series finale.
Glynne picked the perfect time for his first complete-game shutout of the season. With Central Connecticut needing a victory to improve its standing in the race for the NEC Tournament, Glynne took the ball for Game 1 of a four-game series at the Mount.
The senior right-hander scattered four hits and worked around three bases on balls over 9.0 innings of work in Central's 9-0 series-opening road win. Glynne faced 35 batters in the game and fanned seven of them to bring his season strikeout total to 44 over a 63.0-inning sample size. In throwing the second 9-inning shutout by a CCSU hurler this spring, Glynne lowered his ERA to 3.48 and pushed his record up to 3-3.
