Baseball Wins Big at the Mount
Will play in the NEC Tournament in Norwich next week
Sophomore Anthony Turgeon drove in five runs as the Central Connecticut baseball team topped Mount St. Mary's 17-3 in the regular season finale on the road on Saturday. The win moves the Blue Devils to 28-22 overall and 19-13 in Northeast Conference play.
They have qualified for the NEC Tournament in Norwich, CT, at Dodd Stadium, which will begin next Thursday afternoon. Central will be either the third or the fourth seed in the tournament.
Turgeon's five RBI were a career-high, as he went 4-for-6 from the plated including a home run.
The Blue Devils hit three home runs on the day, including Turgeon's and one each from sophomore Dylan DelaCruz and senior Jake Matuszak.
The Blue Devils pounded out 21 hits, and held the Mount to just nine hits and the three runs.
Junior lefty Jack Greenhouse picked up the win pitching five innings and allowing three hits and just two earned runs. Four relievers combined to pitch the final four innings to help the Blue Devils earn the weekend sweep. They outscored the Mount 48-9 in the four-game series.
With the four wins on the weekend the Blue Devils have won seven of eight overall and eight of their last nine NEC contests.
Junior Tyler McIntyre drove in four more runs in the game, giving him 10 in the last three games vs. the Mount. He had three more hits, including two doubles, and finished the weekend with seven hits, five runs scored and 10 RBI.
Matuszak, DelaCruz and sophomore J.P. Sportman all drove in two runs. Matuszak, Sportman, senior Mitch Wells and sophomore Josh Ingham all had three hits. Turgeon led the offense with four hits.
The Blue Devils have finished the regular season, and will await their first round opponent for next week's NEC Tournament. The Blue Devils will be in the tournament for the seventh straight season, and for the 11th time in the last 12 years. They have won four NEC titles under head coach Charlie Hickey.
