Game Two Shutout Gives Baseball Saturday Split
Blue Devils rebound and boast 7-0 shutout in game two
The Central Connecticut baseball team split a doubleheader on the road at Sacred Heart on Saturday afternoon. They lost the first game 8-3, but rebounded to win the second game 7-0, behind a complete-game shutout from junior Jack Greenhouse.
With the split the Blue Devils are now 5-7 overall and 1-2 in Northeast Conference action. The two teams will play a final nine-inning game on Sunday.
Greenhouse posted his first win of the season, posting the complete-game shutout and allowing just four hits. The win snapped a two-game losing streak to the Pioneers, who won on Friday and also took the first game on Saturday.
The junior lefty allowed just one extra-base hit and faced 26 batters in the contest. He struck out four and walked a pair.
Junior first baseman Tyler McIntyre was 3-of-4 with three runs batted in in the victory. Senior catcher Danny Hickey drove in two and senior Mitch Wells and sophomore Anthony Turgeon each added an RBI.
Greenhouse did not face more than four batters in any of his seven innings.
In game one, sophomore second baseman Josh Ingham was 2-for-2 with a run batted in in the loss. Junior Mike Washburn and Turgeon also drove in runs.
The Pioneers scored quickly, putting up three runs in the first inning and two more in the third to take a 5-0 lead. Both third inning runs were unearned as the Blue Devils made two errors in the inning.
The Blue Devils cut it to 5-3 with three runs in the top of the fourth inning. Sophomore J.P. Sportman singled to lead off the inning and went to third on a double from Wells. Sportman scored on a sacrifice fly from Turgeon, and Wells scored on an RBI from Washburn. Ingham drove in the third run of the inning on a sacrifice fly.
The Pioneers scored three more in the sixth inning for the 8-3 final score.
Freshman lefty Cody Brown picked up his first loss on the season, falling to 2-1. He pitched five innings and allowed five runs, just three earned, while striking out five and walking three.
The two teams will finish the weekend series with a single nine-inning game on Sunday in Bridgeport.
