Baseball Tops Holy Cross 13-4 on Tuesday
Win ends five-game losing streak
The Central Connecticut baseball team topped Holy Cross 13-4 on the road on Tuesday night. The win snaps a five-game losing streak for the Blue Devils, who move to 16-14 overall with the victory.
The Blue Devils, who scored only 11 runs in five total games last week, strung together 15 hits and 13 runs to snap their recent losing streak.
Five Blue Devils pitchers combined to lead the Blue Devils to the victory. Freshman Brendyn Karinchak pitched the first two innings, allowing a pair of runs on two hits while posting two strikeouts.
Sophomore Tom Coughlin picked up the victory in relief, pitching 3.1 innings and allowing just three hits, no runs and striking out five Holy Cross batters.
Freshman Dominic Severino and sophomore Josh Ingham pitched the final two innings, combining to allow just one hit and no runs while striking out two batters.
The Blue Devils struck early, scoring a pair of runs in the first inning. Sophomores Dylan DelaCruz and Anthony Turgeon each had an RBI in the inning to give Central the lead. Ingham posted an RBI ground out in the second to lift the lead to 3-0.
Holy Cross scored two in the second and one in the third to tie the score 3-3. They took a 4-3 lead with a run in the bottom of the fourth inning, but would not score again.
Central scored one run in the fifth inning, three in the sixth and five in the seventh to build a 12-4 lead.
In the fifth, senior Jake Matuszak hit his first home run of the season to tie the game 4-4. In the sixth, Severino, Ingham and Matuszak all drove in a run to give the Blue Devils a 7-4 lead.
They broke it open in the seventh, when junior Tyler McIntyre drove in a run and then Turgeon scored on a wild pitch. Senior Danny Hickey's sacrifice fly scored the third run, a wild pitch scored Ingham and senior Mitch Wells drove in the fifth run to make it 12-4. McIntyre's second RBI in the eighth inning pushed the lead to 13-4.
Matuszak, McIntyre and Ingham all drove in a pair of runs in the victory. McIntyre finished 4-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI. Matuszak, Wells, DelaCruz and Igham all had two hits.
Central will return to action at home this weekend, hosting a weekend series with Monmouth beginning on Friday at 3 p.m.
