Women's Track Set for 2017 NEC Outdoor Championships at Mount St. Mary's

The Central Connecticut women's outdoor track and field team will travel down to Mount St. Mary's College in Emmitsburg, MD en route to the 2017 Northeast Conference Championships this Saturday and Sunday, May 6-7. In search of their first outdoor NEC title this weekend at Morgan Track, the Blue Devils will be led by the league's 5K leader, junior Brittany Mendelson, who will look to defend her 2016 title.

At last year's championships, Mendelson also claimed gold in the 1,500 meter run with a time of 4:41.49, and was proclaimed as the 2016 Most Outstanding Track Performer (Distance). The decorated Blue Devil was also named the 2016 Cross Country Outstanding Performer, and the 2016 Indoor Most Valuable Player.

CCSU sophomore and reigning 2017 Indoor Triple Jump Champion, Sierra Nesmith heads into the NEC's as the number one contender in the 400 meter hurdles, and ranks seventh in the triple jump. Junior Melissa Wolliston, 100m hurdle school record-holder, is slated second in the 100m and 400m hurdle standings.

The Central Connecticut 4x100 meter relay team consisting of seniors, Sarah Hicks and Sherise Truman, and freshmen, Erica Snape and Wileshka Samuel, come into this year's championship race with the fastest time in the league of 47.30. The quartet is just 1.58 seconds shy of the NEC meet record of 45.72.

Senior Sherise Truman is on the watch list in the 100m and 200m dash, ranking second and fifth in the NEC, respectively. Last week Truman ran a personal best 100m time of 12.20 at the UMass Pre-Conference Meet followed by the conference Track Athlete of the Week honor.

The Blue Devils finished in sixth place overall last year with a total of 71 points.

All of the championship action will begin on the track at 8:45 a.m. on Saturday with the women's 10,000 meter run and will conclude at 2:45 p.m. with the 4x800 meter relay. The field events will start at 10:00 a.m. with the discus, and finish with the pole vault at 1:00 p.m.
