The Central Connecticut State University women's golf team was selected sixth in the Northeast Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll, released today by the conference. The Blue Devils placed seventh out of 10 teams at last year's NEC Championships. CCSU has won one NEC crown, topping all other conference foes in 2001.
Fourth-year head coach Paula Cloud hopes to halt the Blue Devils' nine-year championship drought in 2010. Junior Chelsea Woods and senior Natalie Jones are back to lead Central this spring. Woods placed 34th on the loop during the 2009 NEC event, while Jones took 30th at last year's championships. Woods led the Blue Devils at this fall's final tournament, the CCSU Fall Invitational.
Freshmen Stephanie Bednar, Katie Reid and Anna Ausanio all proved they were ready to contribute to the team this fall. Each won was the top finisher for Central Connecticut at some point in 2009.
Fairleigh Dickinson was picked to win its third straight women's golf title, missing out on a unanimous selection by only one first place vote. Sacred Heart and St. Francis (PA) earned the two other first place nods and were picked second and fourth in the poll, respectively. Long Island was tabbed third, while Mount St. Mary's was slotted just in front of the Blue Devils at fifth. Robert Morris, Monmouth, St. Francis (NY) and Wagner rounded out the 10 team poll.
