Men's Track Competes at David Hemery Valentine Invitational on Saturday
CCSU will compete for the 2018 NEC Title next weekend Feb. 16-17 at Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex.
The Central Connecticut men's indoor track and field team competed at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational on Saturday, February 10 at Boston University. Junior Akiel Smith highlighted a slew of great Blue Devil performances, taking first in his 200 meter dash heat and finishing 14th overall while setting a new personal record time of 21.77 seconds. Smith topped is old previous fastest time of 21.80 seconds set last weekend at the NEICAAA championships.
Central was very successful in the 200 meter dash following Smith's leading run. Freshman Miles Fye-Moore also ran a personal best time of 21.51 and juniors Julio Gil-Martinez and Jero Sneh rounded out the four Blue Devil competitors, posting times of 23.38 and 23.53 seconds.
Sophomore Evan Walker finished 17th in the 60 meter dash with a time of 7.11 seconds. In the 400 meter dash, sophomore Jack St. Clair led the way with a sprint of 50.21 seconds. Proceeding St. Clair in the standings was rookie Marcris Webb who finished in 52.85 seconds.
Junior Matt Baum just missed a personal best 500 meter dash time by .46 of a second, flying in at 1:07.84 as the only CCSU runner in the event. Central competed a trio of talent in the 800 meter run led by freshman Jonathan Gill who turned in a time of 1:54.46. Junior Adonys Langual ran a solid 1:56.54 and sophomore Julio Arrendondo crossed in at 1:57.27.
Central rookie Christopher Dency ran a 1,000 meter time of 2:42.23 in his first time competing in the event. Junior Franklin Bartley Jr. posted a 60 meter hurdle time of 8.74 seconds.
In the mile, senior Austin Trainor led three other Blue Devils will a 23rd place finish and a time of 4:05.81. Junior Alex Norstrom was next in line after finishing at 4:18.62. Sophomore Roberto Piotto and freshman David Kerns recorded times of 4:21.47 and 4:39.67, respectively.
Gill, Langual, Baum and Arredondo ran a 3:28.22 4x400 meter relay time for CCSU.
Senior Sam Borecki tied his personal best pole vault on Saturday with a throw of 4.95 meters, good for a third place tie. Junior Jeremy Hopwood also threw a distance of 4.05 meters. In the long jump, junior Mike Lang jumped 6.93 meters to lead CCSU. Sophomore Marquis Ward posted a jump of 6.40 meters and sophomore Jarred Creech posted a jump of 6.37 meters. Classmate Evan Walker posted a leap of 5.92 meters.
Sophomore Nana Kissi threw for a distance of 13.12 meters in the shot put and 10.50 meters in the weight throw for the Blue Devils. Freshman Jack Godfrey posted a mark of 12.61 meters.
The Central Connecticut men's track and field team will compete at the 2018 Northeast Conference Championships next Friday and Saturday, February 16-17 which will be hosted by Wagner inside Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island, NY.
