Blue Devils Win 10 of 16 Events, Defeat Southern and Springfield
The Central Connecticut swimming and diving team won 10 out of the 16 total events on Saturday and defeated Southern Connecticut State and Springfield by scores of 165-132 and 174-124, respectively. Senior Erin Crowley, sophomore Megan McGorry and freshmen Alex Czaplicki and Kristen Malski each came away with two first place finishes at the Jack Suydam Natatorium.
The Central Connecticut swimming and diving team won 10 out of the 16 total events on Saturday and defeated Southern Connecticut State and Springfield by scores of 165-132 and 174-124, respectively. Senior Erin Crowley, sophomore Megan McGorry and freshmen Alex Czaplicki and Kristen Malski each came away with two first place finishes at the Jack Suydam Natatorium.
Crowley took home individual firsts in the 50 and 500 freestyle events. She touched in at 24.79 in the 50 and 5:08.70 in the 500. The Plainville, CT native also took home second in the 100 free, with a time of 54.31. McGorry's first place finishes were in 1,000 free and the 400 IM. The sophomore recorded times of 10:25.85 and 4:40.50, respectively. She took home a second place as well, timing in at 2:10.29 in the 200 butterfly.
Czaplicki swam to first in both backstroke events on Saturday. Last week's NEC Swimmer of the Week touched in at 1:00.04 in the 100 back, while 2:11.23 was good enough for first in the 200 back. The freshman finished second in a third event, touching in at 1:00.49 in the 100 fly. Czaplicki's freshman teammate, Kristen Malski, recorded victories in the 100 and 200 breaststroke events. The time of 1:09.91 won the 100 for her, while the time of 2:31.90 placed her first in the 200.
Senior Heather Vendetta had a great all around day, capturing one second and two third place finishes. The Blue Devil co-captain touched in at 4:49.50 in the 400 IM to place second. Vendetta's times of 10:48.88 and 2:14.20 were good enough for third place in the 100 free and 200 fly, respectively.
Both CCSU relay teams swam to victories against Southern and Springfield. In the first event of the day, the team of Kelly Kreho, Malski, McGorry and Alyssa Carlucci placed first in the 200 Medley Relay, touching in at 1:53.40. In Saturday's final event, the team of Czaplicki, Kandra Kane, Crowley and Carlucci grabbed the victory for the Blue Devils in the 400 free relay, with a time of 3:39.37.
Southern Connecticut defeated Springfield 155.5-142.5 in men's swimming and diving action on Saturday.
Central swimming and diving will be in action again tomorrow, as
they host Sacred Heart at the Jack Suydam Natatorium at 2:00
