Blue Devils end the season 31-14 and win second NEC title
The Central Connecticut softball team dropped an 8-0 decision to North Carolina in an elimination game of the 2015 NCAA Softball Tournament on Saturday afternoon. With the loss the Blue Devils end their season with a 31-14 overall record, after winning their second Northeast Conference title in the last three seasons.
The 31 wins for the Blue Devils mark the second most wins in a single season in school history, matching their total from the 2012 season. The school-record for wins is 36 during the 2013 season. Central has now won at least 29 games in a season in five straight season.
On Saturday North Carolina struck quickly with three runs with the help of three errors by the Blue Devils in the first inning.
The lead reached 4-0 on a solo home run in the third by the Tarheels. They added four runs in the top of the fourth inning off of senior starter Laura Messina.
The Blue Devils recorded just three hits in the game. They played only five innings before the game ended with the 8-0 run rule.
Messina ends her Blue Devil career as the most decorated pitcher in school history, finishing with a career mark of 101-45. In 152 career games in the circle she struck out a school-record 997 batters.
North Carolina moves on to face Georgia in an elimination game on Saturday night.
