Softball Splits With Purdue on Tuesday
Blue Devils are now 10-4 on the season
The Central Connecticut softball team moved to 10-4 overall on the season with a split against Purdue on Tuesday afternoon in Tampa, Florida. Central won the first game 2-1 while the Boilermakers rebounded for the game two win, 7-0.
Senior pitcher Laura Messina was superb for the Blue Devils in the 2-1 win in game one, striking out 11 batters while scattering nine hits to pick up her seventh win of the season. She allowed only an RBI single in the third inning while the Blue Devils managed to score a pair of runs in the victory.
With the game tied 1-1, senior Kat Malcolm hit her third home run of the season to break the tie in the fifth inning. Malcolm now lead the team with a .413 average, three home runs and 13 RBI on the year through 14 games.
Messina would allow one base runner in the sixth and two in the seventh but the Boilermakers could not score a run as Messina struck out two in the final inning to secure the victory.
Freshman Tori Constantin drove in the first run of the game for the Blue Devils on a fielder's choice in the top of the first inning.
In game two the Blue Devils were held to just a pair of hits as Purdue scored once in the third, four times in the fifth and two more times in the seventh inning to secure the victory.
Freshman Emily Sargent took the loss on the mound for the Blue Devils pitching all seven innings and allowing 11 hits and four earned runs. She struck out three Purdue batters.
The Blue Devils will return home to host Yale in a doubleheader on Thursday in New Britain. The games have been moved from Yale and will now be played on the CCSU campus at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
