Softball Splits With Yale on Thursday
Blue Devils will return to action at Stony Brook on Mar. 25
The Central Connecticut softball team split a doubleheader in New Britain on Thursday with Yale, winning game one 8-0 and losing the second game 5-4 in extra-innings. Central played as the visiting team even though the games were played on the CCSU campus. The doubleheader was originally scheduled to be played at Yale.
With the split the Blue Devils are now 11-5 on the season.
The Blue Devils took game one 8-0 in six innings behind another solid outing from senior Laura Messina. The righty picked up her eighth win of the season allowing just three hits while striking out four Yale batters over six innings. She faced just 22 batters in the game.
Central scored four times in the first inning and three more times in the second inning to build a 7-0 lead. They added the eight run in the top of the sixth inning.
Junior Eileen Purcell, freshman Tori Constantin and junior Evie Rentzel all drove in two runs in the victory. Rentzel added three hits while freshman Brittany Camara and senior Ashley Black each had a pair of hits. Black added three runs scored and an RBI, while senior Kat Malcolm scored twice and had an RBI for the Blue Devils. Camara also added a pair of runs scored.
Central had nine hits, including three doubles. Black, Purcell and Rentzel each had a double in the game.
In game two Rentzel added an RBI single in the top of the first inning to give the Blue Devils a 1-0 lead. Yale scored three times in the bottom of the inning off of freshman pitcher Emily Sargent to lead 3-1.
Central took a 4-3 lead with a three-run top of the sixth inning. A sacrifice fly from Constantin, an RBI from sophomore Sarah Drazin and a sacrifice bunt RBI from senior Alyssa McCoart scored the three runs and gave the Blue Devils back the lead.
Yale tied it up with a run in the bottom of the seventh inning which sent the game to extra innings. They scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Central will return to action on the road at Stony Brook on March 25.
