Softball Ends Tournament With 4-0 Win
The Blue Devils, led by three hits from junior Tessa Brown, topped Loyola Marymount to close the tournament in Clearwater, FL.
The Central Connecticut softball team ended the USF Under Armour Tournament with a win against Loyola Marymount (6-9) Sunday by a score of 4-0. Junior Tessa Brown led the team in hits with three while scoring one run and senior Nicole Springer belted a two-run homer in the win. The victory improves the Blue Devils' record to 3-2 in their opening weekend.
"Our team performed really well on Sunday to close out the tournament and bring home some momentum going into next week," Head Coach Jeff Franquet said. "Many of the teams we were up against had several games under their belts and I think we competed well in our first outings. I am very proud of our team and we are looking forward to a successful season."
Sophomore Laura Messina took to the circle for the Blue Devils in the win. She faced 26 batters and allowed only four hits. Messina's season record improves to 1-2.
Central put the first run on the board in the top of the third inning. Sophomore Ashley Black hit a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from freshman Kenya McVey. A single from Kat Malcolm eventually brought Black across the plate to put Central up, 1-0.
In the top of the fourth, Brown singled and was followed by a ground-out and a reached base on error to move her into scoring position. Brown was ultimately brought home on another hit from Black to elevate the lead to 2-0.
The Blue Devils clinched the victory in the top of the fifth with a Springer two-run bomb that brought in Malcolm, notched two RBI for Springer and increasing the Central lead to 4-0.
CCSU totaled 10 hits in the match-up against the Lions.
The Blue Devils return to action on Tuesday, March 5 against Yale for their first home contest of the season. The double header will be played at the CCSU Softball Field with the first pitch set for 3 p.m.
