Three Blue Devils Earn Weekly Awards
Senior Rob Hollomon, junior Josh Celerin and freshman Shacor Privott earned weekly honors from the Northeast Conference.
Senior Rob Hollomon headlines a trio of Central Connecticut football players to earn Northeast Conference individual honors on Monday afternoon. Hollomon was named NEC Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this season, while junior Josh Celerin earned defensive player of the week honors and freshman Shacor Privott was tapped as the rookie of the week. CCSU dominated Rhode Island in a 38-14 victory on Saturday evening at Arute Field.
Hollomon rushed for a career-high 236 yards and two touchdowns while becoming only the third 3,000-yard rusher in program history. The senior running back accounted for an 8.7 yards per carry average that received a boost from touchdown runs of 74 and 54 yards.
Hollomon, who leads CCSU in receptions (22), made one catch for 14 yards against URI. Adding 53 kickoff return yards to the mix, Hollomon totaled 303 all-purpose yards during the Blue Devils' first home win of the season.
The Blue Devils bottled up URI for much of their 38-14 victory and Celerin made key contributions to the effort. He logged five total tackles, including 1.5 hits for a loss, and one pass break-up. Celerin made a solo stop on Rhode Island's first play from scrimmage as he dropped the ball carrier for a 3-yard loss. The safety broke up a 1st-and-10 pass play early in the fourth quarter, leading to a 3-and-out.
Privott logged his first career sack during CCSU's home win over CAA member Rhode Island. The freshman linebacker totaled three tackles as part of the Blue Devils' dominant defensive effort. After Ed Groth's 26-yard field goal gave Central a 10-0 lead late in the second quarter, Privott produced a drive-debilitating play on Rhode Island's ensuing possession. He plowed through the line on a 1st-and-10 play and dropped the quarterback for a 6-yard loss, helping preserve CCSU's first-half shutout of the Rams.
Celerin and Privott were part of a tremendous team defensive effort which limited URI to only 266 yards of total offense and just 60 rushing yards. The Blue Devils also posted a shutout in the first half and held the Rams to just six points for 59 minutes.
CCSU is off this weekend, but returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 11 against Duquesne in the Annual Homecoming Game. Fans can watch that contest live on ESPN3.com.
