Senior Tori Sousa scored two goals and assisted on another to earn NEC honors.
Senior captain Tori Sousa of the Central Connecticut women's soccer team was named Northeast Conference Co-Player of the Week after her performance on the pitch this past weekend against Maine and Fairfield, the league announced Monday.
Sousa had two goals and an assist on the weekend to total five points and her play directly helped extend CCSU's unbeaten streak to four games. Central went 1-0-1 on the weekend with a 3-3 draw against Maine and a 3-0 win over Fairfield.
Against Maine on Friday, Sousa scored the game tying goal in the 81st minute and sent the game into overtime after receiving a pass from teammate Kristine Kelly off a Cailynn Harding free kick. Sousa slipped inside the six yard box, received the pass and beat the keeper in the lower right corner of the goal to extend the match and keep the Blue Devil streak alive.
On Sunday against Fairfield, Sousa tacked on another goal and also assisted on one in CCSU's 3-0 shutout victory. Sousa set up junior Clair Walsh to score in the 48th minute of the match to give the Blue Devils a 2-0 lead. Sousa then put the game away in the 79th minute on a free kick opportunity just outside the 18 yard box to cap off her five point weekend and Blue Devil victory.
The Nashua, New Hampshire native finished the weekend with nine shots (two on goal) and now leads the team in points (9), goals (3), shots (28), shots on goal (12) and is tied for the lead in assists (3).
Sousa shares the NEC Player of the Week award with Amanda Goulet from Fairleigh Dickinson. The recognition is the first NEC award for Sousa in her career as a Blue Devil. She previously was tabbed Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week when she attended UMass.
The Blue Devils have 12 days off until they play their next match, which is their NEC opener, at Robert Morris at 3 p.m. Fans can watch the action live, for free, on NECFrontRow.com.
