Halligan, Cafferky Earn NEC Weekly Honors
Two Blue Devils were recognized by the Northeast Conference.
The Central Connecticut women's soccer team went 2-0 this past week in Northeast Conference action, defeating Bryant on Friday night and LIU Brooklyn Sunday afternoon. Sophomore Kelly Halligan and freshman Jennifer Cafferky were recognized by the conference for their contributions to the team's success. Halligan was named NEC Co-Player of the Week, while Cafferky was tabbed the NEC Rookie of the Week, the league announced Monday.
Halligan finished the weekend with five total points on two goals and one assist to earn Co-Player of the Week honors. On Friday night against Bryant, Halligan recorded the first two goals of the match, less than 23 minutes into the game. Both of Halligan's goals came on free kick opportunities just outside the box. The first came at the 18:27 mark and Halligan beat the keeper into the upper left corner. Less than four minutes later, Halligan took another free kick from almost exactly the same spot and this time beat the keeper into the upper right corner.
On Sunday against LIU, Halligan recorded the game-winning assist in double overtime. With just over eight minutes left to play in the match the Blue Devils earned their seventh corner kick. Halligan struck a beautiful ball with her right foot from the left corner that found the head of NEC Rookie of the Week, Jennifer Cafferky, for the game-winning goal. Halligan now has 13 total points on the season coming on four goals and five assists.
Halligan shares the Player of the Week award with Fairleigh Dickinson's Carly Tice.
Cafferky recorded her first career game-winning goal in double overtime against LIU Brooklyn to earn her second straight NEC Rookie of the Week award. The rookie connected with a header off a Halligan corner kick to lift the Blue Devils to victory. The goal was just her second of the season, but it helped the Blue Devils earn a crucial three points in Northeast Conference play.
The honor for Halligan is her second Player of the Week award this season. She earned her first for the week ending Sept. 15 where she recorded four points over two matches. Cafferky is now the back-to-back NEC Rookie of the Week.
The Blue Devils will return to action this Sunday for their last match of the season, at home, against Mount St. Mary's. It will be Senior Day on the CCSU Soccer Field and kickoff is scheduled for 12 p.m.
