Women's Soccer Dominates in Home Win Over NJIT
Blue Devils will host Lehigh on Sunday at 3 p.m.
The Central Connecticut women's soccer team completed a dominating 2-0 win at home on Friday night against visiting NJIT. The win pushes Central's record to 2-3-1 on the season heading into a home match vs. Lehigh on Sunday at 3 p.m. NJIT it now 2-6 overall on the season.
Central outshot NJIT 29-3 in the match, including 13-1 in shots on goal. Sophomore Nicki Turley and senior Rebecca Lewis combined for the shutout victory for the Blue Devils. Lewis made the only save of the game for Central, a diving one-hander in the final minutes of the game that preserved the 2-0 score.
The Blue Devils controlled the first half and had several chances to score before finally taking the 1-0 lead. Off their third corner kick of the half, junior Cailynn Harding scored her first goal of the season off a corner from sophomore Kelly Halligan. Halligan placed the corner perfectly in front of the NJIT keeper, and Harding had great position to take the feed and find the back of the net, giving the Blue Devils the lead.
Central held a 15-0 advantage in shots in the first half. NJIT keeper Karen David made four saves and the Highlanders added a team save before the break to keep the lead 1-0.
The Blue Devils took a 2-0 lead at 32:39 in the second half on the first goal of the season for sophomore Morgan Santoro. Senor Julie Lavoie drove the right side of the box and fed Santoro who was standing open in front of the net for the easy score.
The Blue Devils posted a season-high 29 shots in the game, including 13 on goal. Turley and Lewis each played 45 minutes in goal to share the shutout. Central also held a 7-2 edge in corner kicks.
