Blue Devils Help CFC Passion to National Semifinals
Five Central Connecticut women’s soccer student-athletes helped the CFC Passion to a regional championship and a berth in the national final four of the Women’s Premier Soccer League this summer.
Five Central Connecticut women's soccer student-athletes helped the CFC Passion to a regional championship and a berth in the national final four of the Women's Premier Soccer League this summer.
Seniors Julie Lavoie, Christina Boucher and Alex DeCaro as well as junior Cailynn Harding saw action for the Passion throughout the team's final four run. Blue Devil junior Marissa Quesnel was also a member of the CFC squad during the regular season, but missed the postseason due to injury.
During the regular season the Passion posted an 8-0-4 record and topped the Mid-Atlantic Division with 28 points. As a divisional winner the Passion earned a place in the Northeast Regional along with the winner of the other three divisions in the Northeast.
CFC upset #1 seeded ASA Charge by a score of 2-1 in the semifinals before knocking off Tri-State Division Champion New York Athletic Club in the Regional Final by a 1-0 score.
By winning the regional the Passion advanced to the WPSL National Final Four along with Beach Futbol Club of the West Region, the Chicago Red Stars of the Midwest Region and the Houston Aces of the Southern Region.
CFC drew the Houston Aces in the semifinals and fell by a score of 2-0. Houston eventually fell to the Beach Futbol Club in the final match.
Lavoie was tied for the team lead in goals (3) and was tied for second on the Blue Devils with 6 points last season. Boucher totaled four points for the Blue Devils last season with a goal and two assists. DeCaro, Harding and Quesnel also saw action for CCSU in 2013.
The Central Connecticut women's soccer team will report for preseason on August 7. The first match of the 2014 season will be at Vermont on August 22.
