Whittaker Earns Gold, Yanko Earns Bronze On Day One of NEC Indoor Championship
Whittaker captured his medal in the 3000m and Yanko earned his in the high jump.
The Central Connecticut men's track and field team currently sits in second place behind Wagner with 23 points after day one in Staten Island Sunday afternoon. Samuel Whittaker delivered gold in the 3000-meter run for CCSU on his first and last year competing in the NEC Indoor Track and Field Championships. Nicolai Yanko took home bronze in the high jump.
KEY TRACK PERFORMANCES
- The Blue Devils will have Kenny Agwu competing in the 60m hurdles as the 7 seed after an 8.63 finish in the prelims.
- Tristan Burke qualified in second place in the 60-meter dash (6.92).
- Samuel Whittaker (4:20.00) and Jake Ireland (4:19.39) advanced to the final of the mile, as the second and seventh seeds.
- The Blue Devils placed three runners into the finals of the 400m dash including Noah Colangelo (49.52), Maxwell Czarnecki (49.75), and Jonathan Orlando (49.80).
- CCSU also had three runners qualify for the 500m finals including the one seed, Gabriel Kwarteng (1:05.11), KyMoy Phillip (1:06.63), and William Dalles (1:07.31).
- The 800-meter run will have a field of four Blue Devils that include Chris Abbey (1:54.68), Jacob Ireland (1:55.90), Aiden Budge (1:56.35), and Ryan McCauley (1:56.44).
- Noah Colangelo will compete in the 200m dash after qualifying as the 8 seed (22.13).
KEY FIELD PERFORMANCES
- Nicolai Yanko took home bronze in the high jump (1.91m) to add six points to the Blue Devils total.
- Keith Townsend finished in 7th place in the high jump (1.86m) for two points and Kyle Wimbish placed 8th respectively (1.86m) to add another point to the team total.
