Hawerchuk teed off the first hole to open the regional. He shot a 40 on the par 35 front nine, bogeying the first, fourth and eighth holes while posting a double bogey on the third. The Orangeville, Ontario native registered pars on the remaining five holes. Hawerchuk strung together back-to-back pars to start the back nine. Pars on the 13th and 14th holes followed a bogey on 12. After recording a triple bogey on 15 and a bogey on 16, Hawerchuk birdied the 249 yard par three 17th. He posted a par on 18 to come in at 80.
Tennessee freshman Darren Renwick is on top of the individual leaderboard. He shot an even par 71. Three golfers are one shot back. The Volunteers (+12) are one shot in front of Wake Forest in the team standings.
Hawerchuk will start round two on the 10th tee at 8:40 a.m. tomorrow.
