Baseball Wins Sixth Straight Game
Blue Devils will play two at Fairfield on Saturday at 1 p.m.
The Central Connecticut baseball team scored two eighth inning runs to post its sixth straight win, 6-4, over Albany on Thursday afternoon in New Britain. With the win Central Connecticut is now 19-15 overall, while Albany sits at 7-27 after the loss.
The Great Danes struck first with an unearned run in the top of the first inning. A throwing error on a possible inning-ending double play plated the run. They added two in the top of the third inning on a bases loaded single from Craig Lepre to make it 3-0.
The Blue Devils tied it up in the fifth inning. Following a single and an error off the bat of junior Bryan Rivera, senior J.P. Sportman tripled to deep left center field to plate both runners and make it 3-2. An RBI single from senior Anthony Turgeon tied the score at three.
Albany scored an unearned run in the sixth inning to take a 4-3 lead.
Central tied it once again 4-4 in the seventh. Sportman led off the inning with his second triple of the game. He scored on a single up the middle from freshman Franklin Jennings.
The Blue Deviles scored twice in the bottom of the eighth inning to take the 6-4 lead, their first of the game. With the bases loaded and two outs Turgeon singled up the middle to score two. The RBis were his second and third of the game and the hit was his third straight.
Freshman Kevin Connolly, the reigning Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week, moved to 2-0 on the season picking up the victory in relief. He pitched one inning and struck out one. Classmate Austin Salnitis pitched well in relief for the Blue Devils, pitching three innings while allowing just two hits and one run while striking out two. Ingham picked up his eight save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning.
Turgeon finished the game with three hits and three RBI. Sportman had a pair of triples and drove in two in the victory.
The Blue Devils will return to action on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. on the road at Fairfield.
