Women's Lacrosse Wins First of 2014
Blue Devils Top Iona 15-10 at Home on Tuesday
The Central Connecticut women's lacrosse team posted its first victory of the season, 15-10, at home over Iona on Tuesday afternoon. The Blue Devils are now 1-1 on the season. The win is the first at CCSU for first-year head coach Laura Campbell.
The Blue Devils led 8-5 at halftime, but after taking a 9-5 lead the Gaels scored the next three goals to cut the lead to 9-8. Central answered with three straight goals in the next 4:27 to push the lead back to 12-8.
Iona answered again, scoring two straight, cutting the Blue Devil lead to 12-10 with 5:19 on the clock. But they would get no closer as the Blue Devils scored the final three goals of the game to make it 15-10.
Sophomore Elyse Malecki and senior captain Amanda Toke each scored four goals for the Blue Devils in the victory. Malecki scored the first goal of the game and then two of the final three for the Blue Devils. Toke scored two in each half, including the first goal after the Gaels had cut the lead to two with 17 minutes to play.
Toke added a pair of assists in the game, as did junior Brigit Hogan. Sophomore Falynn McCartney had three goals and senior Claire Healy and sophomore Madison Hughes each added two.
Junior Morgan Tullar made seven saves in goal to record her first victory of the season. She stopped four shots in the first half and three in the second. Central outshot the Gaels 30-23, including 19 first half shots.
The four goals and five points for Malecki are both career-highs. Toke's six-point performance is also a career-high.
The Blue Devils return to action on Saturday at Hofstra the game is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start.
