Mount Snaps Women's Basketball Win Streak on Monday Night

A cold-shooting night in Emmitsburg, MD allowed Mount St. Mary's to put a halt to the Central Connecticut women's basketball team's four-game win streak, prevailing 76-56 on Monday night. The Blue Devils connected on 19-of-68 (.279) field goals compared to the Mountaineers 31-for-65 (.477) performance from the floor. Rookie Emma McCamus led Central on the offensive end with 12 points.
The Blue Devils (6-19, 6-8 NEC) trailed by double-figures for 36:53 of the contest. Mount St. Mary's made 9-of-23 three-pointers in its hot-shooting effort to advance to 6-9 in the conference and 9-17 on the year.
Mount St. Mary's opened the game on fire from the floor, connecting on their first 9-of-12 shots from the floor and draining four threes to take a 24-10 first quarter lead. Central managed just 3-for-16 (.18.8) shooting to start the contest.
Needing a spark, Central Connecticut rookie Emma McCamus started the second quarter on a 4-0 individual run, took an offensive charge on the Mount's Juliette Lawless, and forced two Mount turnovers to give the Blue Devils some energy.
The Mountaineers were led by Caroline Hummell who posted 13 first half points and shot 19-for-35 (.543) as a unit. McCamus paced the Blue Devils with nine points at the break, all of which coming in the second quarter. CCSU was cold from the court, hitting on just 9-for-32 (.281) of its field goal attempts.
Following fifth year Morgan Johnson's three-pointer on the initial possession of the second half, Mount St. Mary's ignited a 10-0 run, building a 65-42 lead heading into the final quarter.
Junior Andi Lydon led the Blue Devils on the board with eight rebounds, and classmate Kiana Patterson dished out a game-high tying five assists.
Central would out-score Mount 14-11 in the final 10 minutes of action while forcing seven turnovers, but it wasn't enough to create comeback as time ran out.
The Mount's Caroline Hummell paced four players in double-figures with a game-high 17 points. Juliette Lawless tackled her first double-double of the season with 13 points and 14 boards, helping MSM out-rebound Central 48-38.
Central Connecticut will welcome the NEC's top two contenders this upcoming weekend inside Detrick Gymnasium for the Blue Devils final two home games of the 2017-18 regular season. On Saturday, CCSU will face Saint Francis U. on Senior Day in the first game of a double-header with the men's basketball team at 1:00 p.m. Robert Morris will then take on the Blue Devils on Monday, Feb. 19 at 7:00 p.m. for their annual breast cancer awareness game.
