Morgan State Downs Women's Basketball, 61-41, Wednesday
Freshman Emma McCamus led the way with a season-high 12 points for CCSU.
The Central Connecticut women's basketball teams was shorted at home against the Morgan State Bears, 61-41, Wednesday night in Detrick Gymnasium. The Blue Devils were led by freshman Emma McCamus with a season-high 12 points on 75.0 percent shooting knocking down 3-for-4 from the field. The rookie drained a perfect 6-of-6 from the free throw line of Central's 15-of-19 performance at the foul line.
CCSU falls to 0-6 on the year and Morgan State picks up its second straight victory now at 4-3 this season.
The Blue Devils struggled as a unit shooting a season-low 27.3 percent (12-44) from the floor and just 16.7 percent from behind the arc. The Bears finished the game 24-of-62 (.387) led by forward Lexus Spears with 22 points and a game-tying high eight boards.
After a scoreless 5:52, Morgan State's leading scorer Adre'onia Coleman broke the silence with a jumper outside the lane. Central would respond with a 5-0 run sparked by a three-pointer by a junior Kiana Patterson and a field goal at the 3:08 mark.
The Bears would then close out the first quarter on an 11-0 run with six different players entering the scoring column to pull ahead 13-5.
Senior Brianna Jacobs came off the bench to give six productive minutes in the second quarter with five points and four rebounds. The Blue Devils went 6-for-22 (.333) in the second quarter and trailed 31-17 at the break.
The Bears shot 36.1 percent from the floor in the first half on 13-of-36 shooting and forced 15 CCSU turnovers.
Late in the third, freshman Ashley Forker converted the old-fashioned three-point play on a reverse lay-up and then found Lydon underneath who got fouled and went 2-for-2 from the free throw line.
Despite the game's lowest offensive quarter, Morgan State extended its lead to as many as 18 at the 6:25 mark in the third.
McCamus nailed a jumper with 7:35 to go in the fourth quarter to cut the lead down to 12 points, 45-33, but Morgan State maintained a large enough cushion to seal the win. The Bears collected 24 points off 25 CCSU turnovers and scored 42 of its 61 points in the paint.
Jihayah Chavis had 12 points for MSU.
MSU held a 43-33 advantage on the glass. Jacobs chipped in six points and six rebounds. Lydon ended the game with eight points including a flawless 4-for-4 effort from the charity stripe and pulled down five boards.
The Central Connecticut women's basketball opens the month of December with a road trip to Pittsburgh, PA to face the Duquesne Dukes of the Atlantic-10 conference. The Blue Devils will play the Keystone State foe on Saturday, Dec. 2 inside the Palumbo Center at 2:00 p.m.
