Virginia Downs Women's Basketball on Sunday
Patterson notched two game-highs in points and assists.
The Central Connecticut women's basketball team fell to ACC member Virginia 103-59 on Sunday afternoon inside John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville, VA. Junior Kiana Patterson scored a game-high 19 points on 6-of-9 shooting 5-of-7 of which was from downtown. Patterson also dished out a game-high four assists to lead the Blue Devils.
CCSU falls to 0-2 on the year and Virginia advances to 1-1 on the season.
Virginia ran off on an 8-0 run to start the game before rookie Ashley Berube found junior Andi Lydon on a dive down the heart of the Cavalier zone for an easy lefty lay-in. Patterson then snuck in to the corner for a three-pointer off of the inbounds.
2017-18 newcomers, graduate Morgan Johnson and freshman Emma McCamus connected on back-to-back buckets in the final minute of the first quarter. Johnson opened the second quarter with another three-point field goal at 9:45.
Patterson netted a trio of consecutive three-pointers proceeding the media timeout forcing Virginia to call a timeout late in the second quarter. The junior then dished off a pass to an open junior Sydney Hines for the Blue Devil's seventh trifecta of the first half.
Central out-scored UVA 14-11 in the final 4:51 of the first half and shot 7-of-17 (.412) collectively from behind the arc.
At the break, Patterson lead all-scorers with 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting including 4-for-5 from downtown and added three assists. Virginia, led by its 32 points in the paint, shot 61.9% from the floor and led 63-34 after 20 minutes of action.
CCSU struggled from the field in the third quarter going 1-for-11 as the ACC foe out-scored the Blue Devils 22-7.
Sophomore guard Taylor Goode chipped in five fourth quarter points, including a deep three from the left wing that she knocked down through contact with 1:20 left in the contest.
Virginia's high-powered play was carried by Jocelyn Willoughby who tied Patterson with a game-high 19 points. The Cavs saw three other members in double-figures including Felicia Aiyeotan with a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Hines totaled nine points and Johnson added eight and four boards on the day. Junior Denisha Gardener and true freshman Ashley Berube each pulled down six rebounds. Central shot 30.9% (17-of-55) from the floor and sank 10-of-33 three-pointers (30.3%).
Central Connecticut's bench combined for 19 points with 10 players in the scoring column.
The Central Connecticut women's basketball team will return back to New Britain, CT on Thursday, Nov. 16 to play Brown in its home-opener at 7:00 p.m. inside William H. Detrick Gymnasium.
