Messina Earns Sixth NEC Pitcher of the Week honor
The junior was awarded the NEC Pitcher of the Week honor for the last week of the regular season.
Junior Laura Messina of the Central Connecticut softball team tallied her sixth NEC Pitcher of the Week honor to close the regular season, the conference announced Monday. Messina has led the Blue Devils to a 28-14 (11-5 NEC) season and will return to the circle this weekend at the 2014 NEC Tournament in Smithfield, RI.
Messina capped off the regular season pitching a five-inning shutout on Thursday. The junior, who entered the week tied for first in the nation in shutouts with 12, posted her 13th shutout of the season with the win. She is now in a three-way tie for first in the country.
Messina struck out seven batters against Quinnipiac to add to her already impressive season total. Currently, she posts 240 strikeouts on the season and is quickly approaching her own CCSU record of 246 which she set last season.
Messina's record improves to 23-11 on the season after this past week.
The Blue Devils are set to return to action this weekend, May 8-10, in Smithfield, RI as they look to defend their NEC title at the 2014 NEC Tournament.
