Messina Named Corvais ECAC Pitcher of the Week
Junior Laura Messina adds the accolade to her fourth NEC Pitcher of the Week honor this season.
Laura Messina of the Central Connecticut softball team adds Corvias Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Pitcher of the Week to her list of accolades this season. The junior was announced as the award recipient on Tuesday after being named NEC Pitcher of the Week for the fourth time this season on Monday.
Messina takes the honor for the Division I New England region after posting a 0.82 ERA this week. She pitched five complete games including three shutouts, going 4-1 on the week and improving her season record to 17-9.
She struck out an impressive 50 batters in 34.0 innings, lifting her career total to 638. She also posted a career-high 15 strikeouts in CCSU's victory over UMass-Lowell on April 10.
Messina has registered nine shutouts so far this season and is currently tied for fifth in the nation behind a four-way tie for first at 10. She ranks 18th in the country in strikeouts (185) and 28th in victories (17). She currently ranks first in all three categories in the NEC.
Messina and the rest of the Blue Devils are set to return to action this weekend in back-to-back NEC doubleheaders. They will travel to Saint Francis U on Friday and Robert Morris on Saturday.
