Malcolm Homer Helps CCSU Top FDU, 3-0
Junior Laura Messina pitches her 14th shutout of the season and breaks her CCSU single-season strikeout record.
The Central Connecticut softball team topped the Fairleigh Dickinson Knights by a score of 3-0 on the opening day of the 2014 NEC Tournament on Thursday. Junior Laura Messina registered her 14th shutout of the season in the win and broke her CCSU single-season strikeout record (250).

With the win, the Blue Devils move to 29-14 on the season while the Knights drop to 21-20. CCSU will face the #1 seed Bryant tomorrow, Friday, May 9, at 10:30 a.m.
Messina allowed just one hit in seven innings for CCSU tallying 10 strikeouts in the circle to break her own CCSU single-season record. She now owns the record with 250. The junior also adds her 14th shutout of the season with the win and improves her season record to 24-11.
The Blue Devils put the first run on the board in the bottom of the third on an RBI single from freshman Alexis Debrosse. Debrosse shot a single through the left side to drive home senior Arielle Bruno, who had singled to the FDU shortstop to reach the bases.
Central maintained the one-run lead until the bottom of the sixth when junior Kat Malcolm registered her fifth home run of the season. Malcolm crushed a two-run homer over the center-field fence to bring in Debrosse, who had doubled to right center.
CCSU registered six hits in 24 at bats compared to one in 22 for the Knights. Debrosse led the Blue Devils on offense going 2-for-3 at the plate including one double. Senior Tessa Brown also doubled on the day.
