Women's Soccer Draws With Saint Francis U, 1-1
Lancor nets third goal of the week to help CCSU earn a 1-1 draw.
The Central Connecticut women's soccer team settled for a 1-1 tie with Saint Francis U on Sunday at the CCSU Soccer Field. The Blue Devils notched an early goal, but the Red Flash were able to equalize early in the second half to wrap up the scoring.
The draw leaves CCSU at 7-4-4 overall and 2-2-2 in the Northeast Conference. SFU is 4-11-2 overall and 4-2-1 in the NEC.
Central gained the lead in the 7th minute when sophomore Alex Zampini had a shot from inside the box from the left side, but it was saved. Senior Delaney Lancor picked up the loose ball on the right side and slotted her shot into the unguarded net for a 1-0 lead.
The Blue Devils nearly doubled their lead to open the second half when senior Cailynn Harding lofted a shot from distance, but it was just high and went off the crossbar.
Saint Francis pressured the Central defense minutes later. In the 52nd minute, Casey Gallaher raced up the right wing for the Red Flash, but her shot was straight into the arms of junior Nicki Turley. Just three minutes later, SFU managed to knot the game after Allison LaDuke dribbled along the endline and sent a cross in and found the foot of Gallaher who put her shot past Turley to make it 1-1.
With just over eight minutes remaining sophomore Laura Casanovas Diaz weaved through the Red Flash defense and took a shot from the top of the box that deflected just wide.
In the first extra period, LaDuke broke down the left wing but her pass to the front of the net was cleared away by the CCSU defense. The Blue Devils had a chance off a free kick that was sent into the box and found freshman Charlotte Maurer but her shot was saved by Romina Kunze.
Just past midway through the second overtime, Zampini ripped a shot that sailed just high. With under two minutes to play, Central earned a corner kick but freshman Shelbie Carr pushed her header just wide and the teams finished with a 1-1 tie.
Turley finished with six saves on the day as CCSU held a 19-17 margin in shots. Kunze made four stops for the Red Flash.
CCSU returns to action on Friday with a game at Bryant. Kickoff is slated for 3 p.m. and all of the action can be seen live, for free, on NECFrontRow.com.
