Senior Delaney Lancor scored two first half goals to power the Central Connecticut women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Yale on Monday night on the road in New Haven, CT. The Blue Devils improve to 6-4-3 overall on the season with the victory in their final non-conference match of the year. Yale falls to 4-7-2 on the season with the loss.
After dropping their last two matches, the Blue Devils responded and were on the winning end of a 2-0 decision on Monday night in big part to senior forward Delaney Lancor. Lancor wasted little time giving CCSU the lead just 4:08 into the match. With the four minute mark approaching, she made a run and was able to slip behind the Bulldogs back line right as freshman Emma Hubbard played a perfect through ball to her for a breakaway. Lancor collected the pass and converted the one-on-one opportunity to give CCSU the early 1-0 advantage.
Just over two minutes later, Lancor found the back of the net again for her second marker of the match and team-leading fifth of the season to put the Blue Devils up 2-0. Junior Brianne Casey sent in a cross from the corner that got past all of the Bulldog defenders and found a wide open Lancor who fired it past the Yale keeper at the 6:28 mark. Lancor now leads the team with twelve points on five goals and a pair of assists on the season.
Freshman Ashley Cavanaugh picked up her second collegiate win in goal for the Blue Devils in just her third career start and fourth career appearance. The rookie made an impressive seven saves in the win and improves to 2-0-1 on the year. Freshman Maritza Grillo was dealt the loss in goal for the Yalies and drops her record to 1-1-0. She made a pair of saves.
The Bulldogs held a commanding 24-8 advantage over the Blue Devils in shots, including a 17-2 advantage in the second half, but were unable to convert on the CCSU defense. Yale led 7-4 in shots on goal.
The Elis also held a slight 6-2 advantage in corner kicks in the match, but the Blue Devil defense stood tall again and denied all of the Bulldogs set piece opportunities.
Central is currently 1-2-1 in Northeast Conference play and returns to league action next with a pair of matches at home this weekend.
