Despite outshooting Mount St. Mary's 18-7, the Central Connecticut women's soccer team settled for a 0-0 double overtime draw on the road on Friday afternoon in Emmitsburg, MD. With the draw the Blue Devils move to 5-2-3 overall on the season and 1-0-1 in NEC play.
Central dominated the majority of play throughout the match, especially in the first period outshooting the Mountaineers (1-12-1, 0-2-1 NEC) 12-1. They also created multiple scoring opportunities throughout the match, including a controversial chance late in the second overtime.
With less than three minutes left in the second overtime the Blue Devils earned their seventh corner kick, and it had appeared that CCSU had converted the set piece to break the deadlock for a dramatic victory.
Senior Charlie Branch sent the corner kick into the area, finding the head of classmate Claire Walsh. Walsh's header was blocked and the rebound caromed off a Mount St. Mary's defender and onto the foot of freshman Emma Hubbard whose shot rocketed into back of the netting. However, an apparent handball by the Blue Devils just before the shot cancelled out the game-winning goal and the match ended in a draw.
Branch and Walsh led the offensive attack for the Blue Devils on the afternoon, accounting for five shots each and a shot on goal apiece. Sophomore Nicki Turley made one stop in goal and moves her record to 4-2-2 on the season between the pipes. The shutout is the third for Turley on the year.
The Mount's Rachel Bourne recorded six saves in goal for the Mountaineers as she moved her record to 0-4-1.
Next up for the Blue Devils is a key NEC showdown on the road at Fairleigh Dickinson. The Knights are undefeated (2-0) in NEC action and also at home (5-0). The match is also a rematch from last year's 2014 NEC Championship game which the Blue Devils prevailed 2-0 to earn their eighth Northeast Conference championship in program history.
Kickoff is slated for 12 p.m. at University Stadium in Teaneck, NJ and all of the action can be seen live, for free, on NECFrontRow.com.
