Women's Soccer Tops Stony Brook 3-1 In Season Opener
The Blue Devils topped Stony Brook 3-1 in their season opener at the Fairfield University Women's Soccer Invitational.
The Central Connecticut women's soccer team topped Stony Brook 3-1 in its season opener on Friday night in the first round of the Fairfield University Women's Soccer Invitational. The Blue Devils move to 1-0 on the season with the win and the Seawolves fall to 0-3 after the loss.
Sophomore Jennifer Cafferky, 2014 NEC Rookie and Defensive Player of the Year, was the first to find the back of the net in the 2015 season with a goal in the 17th minute. Junior Kelly Halligan and senior Charlie Branch assisted on the play.
Freshman Emma Hubbard notched her first goal in a Blue Devil uniform and built the CCSU lead to 2-0 with a goal just before halftime in the 43rd minute. Junior Brianne Casey played a long ball down the field to Hubbard who then was able to put the ball past the keeper for the goal.
Stony Brook threatened and cut the CCSU lead to 2-1 with a goal at the 78:30 mark. Raven Edwards cracked the scoreboard for the Seawolves with a penalty kick goal.
However, the Blue Devils responded and put the game away with a late goal by senior Delaney Lancor. Junior Alysa Christo played a ball to Lancor who put a move on the goalie inside the box and finished to secure the win for the Blue Devils.
The 2014 NEC Goalkeeper of the Year, Nicki Turley, got the win between the pipes for CCSU in the match. The junior logged seven saves on the night.
The Blue Devils held a slight 18-14 advantage in shots in the match, led by freshman Danielle Pearse who tallied four.
Central will return to action on Sunday at 2 p.m. as they face-off with the host team, Fairfield, in their second and final game of the Fairfield University Women's Soccer Invitational.
