Women's Basketball Journeys to LIU Brooklyn Monday Night

The Central Connecticut women's basketball team (9-15, 6-7 NEC) visits Brooklyn, NY on Monday night for a showdown with the LIU Brooklyn Blackbirds (8-16, 6-7 NEC). With just five games remaining on the NEC regular season docket, the Blue Devils and Blackbirds are tied for sixth in the NEC standings heading into tonight's contest. Last Time Out • The Blue Devils fell on the road to the Sacred Heart Pioneers on Saturday, 79-69. The Pioneers staved off a late Blue Devil surge hitting six-of-six free throws down the stretch to secure the victory and drop Central to 9-15 overall and 6-7 in NEC action. SHU shot 93.1% (27-29) from the free throw line in the game for the victory. Senior TeJahne Malone led three Blue Devils in double-figures with 17 points. Junior Aleah Epps and freshman Kiana Patterson added 16 points and 10 points, respectfully.
Series History (14-18) • Tonight's matchup marks the 33rd meeting all-time between these two programs at the Division I level. LIU Brooklyn holds an 18-14 edge in the series after topping the Blue Devils, 59-45, in New Britain earlier this season. Last year, the Blue Devils swept the season series with a, 75-70, victory at home and a, 68-54, win on the road
Earlier This Season • The Blue Devils suffered a, 59-45, loss to LIU Brooklyn at home in their second Northeast Conference game of the season back on Jan. 4. A huge second quarter where the Blackbirds outscored the Blue Devils, 22-8, paved the way for the LIU victory. They would take a 31-21 advantage at the half and never let CCSU get close in the second stanza. The Blackbirds forced 19 Blue Devil turnovers turning them into 15 points and out-rebounded Central 37-29. Shanovia Dove paced LIU with a game-high 21 points and added three assists. TeJahne Malone had a team-high 12 points for the Blue Devils and also grabbed a game-high eight rebounds. The Blue Devils recorded a season-high 10 blocks as a team in the setback.
Piper vs. LIU • Head Coach Beryl Piper is 6-10 (.375) all-time against LIU Brooklyn in her ninth year at the helm of the Blue Devils. She sports a 3-4 mark against the Blackbirds in Brooklyn, including a 68-54 victory a year ago.
Scouting the Blackbirds • The Blackbirds are 8-16 overall, 6-7 in Northeast Conference action and sport a 2-9 mark at home this season. They average 57.8 ppg as a team and are led by Shanovia Dove who averages 13.3 ppg. Shanice Vaughan also averages in double-figures for LIU at 12.5 ppg. Jolanna Ford is the Blackbirds best rebounder pulling down 7.0 rpg on average. The Blue Devils will have to take care of the basketball tonight as LIU likes to utilize its quickness and athleticism with high-intensity defense and full-court pressure. They have recorded 207 steals as a team on the season.
Up Next For CCSU • The Blue Devils will return to action next as they play three of their final four games of the season at home. They will host Wagner and Mount St. Mary's next weekend on Saturday and Monday.
