Babe Records Double-Double at SHU
Junior Jessica Babe recorded a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
The Central Connecticut women's basketball team fell to Sacred Heart, 61-39, on Monday night at the Pitt Center in Fairfield, CT. The Blue Devils (14-13, 8-8 NEC) were led by a double-double from junior Jessica Babe while the Pioneers (19-8, 11-4 NEC) featured three players with double-digit points.
The Blue Devils and Pioneers played a tight game over the first 12 minutes of play. CCSU was leading 18-14 with eight minutes left in the half, but the Pioneers broke the game open with a 21-2 run to close the period.
Sophomore Kaley Watras led the Blue Devils with nine points in the period. She was four-of-four from the field, running her stretch of perfect shooting to 10-of-10 dating back to Saturday's game.
Junior Jessica Babe added seven points and senior Jaclyn Babe and freshman Raven Makins each scored two for the Blue Devils in the period.
Morgan Merriman led the Sacred Heart offense with 14 points on 7-of-10 shooting in the first half. Gabriella Washington finished as the game's leading scorer with 22 points.
Sacred Heart limited Watras to one point and Jessica Babe to three points in the second half and both players finished with a team-high 10 points.
Junior Jaleen Thomas was the Blue Devils' leading scorer in the second half with four points. Thomas also had five rebounds in the second half after not recording a point or rebound in the first period.
Freshman Kayla Miller dropped in a basket and free throw to total three points in the second half and sophomore Johnna Fisher, senior Jameilia Dillon, senior Kirsten Daamen and Jaclyn Babe all had baskets in the second period.
Jessica Babe finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds. It is her third double-double of the season.
The Blue Devils shot 30% (15-of-50) from the floor for the game and were hurt by 34 turnovers. The 39 points is a season-low for the Blue Devils.
The Pioneers converted CCSU's turnovers into 30 points and also dominated with a 28-10 advantage in the paint.
CCSU did hold a 44-34 advantage on the glass, including 16 offensive rebounds, but the Blue Devils managed just three second chance points.
The Blue Devils return to action on Saturday against Robert Morris at Detrick Gym. Prior to the game the three Blue Devil seniors will be honored.
