WBB Tops New Hampshire
The Central Connecticut women's basketball team topped New Hampshire on Sunday afternoon.
The Central Connecticut women's basketball team earned a 43-32 victory over New Hampshire on Sunday afternoon with a strong defensive effort. The Blue Devils (4-3) were led by 14 points from senior Jaclyn Babe.
The offenses for both teams started slowly with the Blue Devils scoring the lone basket over the first four minutes of play.
Following the slow start, the Blue Devils began to score and opened up an 8-2 lead. CCSU kept control of the game, but New Hampshire (4-5) was able to climb back in late in the first half.
Central scored the final basket of the half on a steal and break-away layup by sophomore Kaley Watras. The score put CCSU up 22-18.
In the second half, UNH closed the gap to 27-25, but junior Jessica Babe hit a three to put CCSU up by five. A Wildcat free throw cut Central's lead to four before baskets by Watras and Jaclyn Babe put CCSU ahead, 34-26.
Free throws by junior Jaleen Thomas and a basket by senior Kirsten Daamen helped Central take a 38-32 lead with 6:08 left in the game.
New Hampshire did not score again in the game.
A layup by Thomas and free throws by Jessica and Jaclyn Babe pushed Central's lead to 43-32.
Central limited the Wildcats to 32 points, the lowest total CCSU has allowed this season. The Blue Devils also held their opponent to 14 points in the second half for the second consecutive game.
Jaclyn Babe led all scorers with 14 points in the game. She also had seven steals for the third time this season, matching her career-high. Daamen was second on the team with eight points.
Jessica Babe contributed seven points and led the team with eight rebounds. Thomas followed her up with six boards.
The Blue Devils never trailed in the game and also prevented UNH from tying the score at any point.
New Hampshire's first points of the game came seven minutes and 20 seconds into the first half. The Blue Devils also held the Wildcats scoreless over the final 7:11 of the second half.
The Blue Devils return to action on Wednesday, Dec. 19, against LaSalle at Detrick Gym. CCSU will play again on Dec. 21, as part of a doubleheader with the men's team.
