Three Sign with Women's Basketball
Head coach Beryl Piper has signed three student-athletes for next year.
Head coach Beryl Piper has announced the addition of three student-athletes to the Central Connecticut women's basketball program for the 2013-14 academic year. Lauren Wolosik, Chayla Lewis and Giocelis Reynoso will join the Blue Devils next season as freshmen.
Wolosik is a 5-10 guard from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania's North Catholic High School. Woloski was a second-team all-state selection, a Pittsburgh Post Gazette North "Fab-Five" and Class A "Fab-Five" selection. She also earned player of the week honors from the paper. The Pittsburgh Tribune Review named Wolosik to the Terrific Ten All-Section Team. In the classroom Wolosik, was the top ranked student in her class and a member of the National Honor Society.
Piper's Take: "Lauren is a steady player that can play multiple positions. She has great fundamental skills, which allow her to make great decisions on the court. She is the ultimate team player that can shoot it off the dribble or hit the three."
Wolosik on CCSU: "I chose CCSU because I knew I would get a quality education while being able to play for an excellent basketball program. I'm excited to further my career at CCSU and be a part of the Blue Devil family."
Lewis is 5-10 and can play guard or forward. She played basketball for head coach Carroll Holmes at Friendly High School in Fort Washington, MD. She also played on the Maryland Pride Nile Elite AAU team for coach Tony Gorham. Lewis was named to The Washington Post All-Girls League Team and to The Gazette All-County Team. She also earned Rookie of the Year honors in 2009 and helped her high school volleyball team to a pair of division championships. In the classroom, Lewis is a member of the National Honor Society and a member of the National Society of High School Scholars.
Piper's Take: "She is a powerful player who can shoot the perimeter shot and gets to the rim. She has a good understanding for the game and will dominate the boards."
Lewis on CCSU: "I chose CCSU because of their commitment to excellence, hard work, dedication and determination. Most importantly, CCSU demonstrated a welcoming environment; it had the feeling of family that was a critical factor for me."
Reynoso is a 6-2 center from the Bronx and played her high school basketball at the Bronx Preparatory Charter School for head coach Danielle Moseley. Reynoso was named Bronx Prep's Most Outstanding Player following the 2011-12 season. She also plays for the CAS Panthers AAU team and coach Marvin Stevens. While playing with the Panthers at the Blue Chip Preseason Challenege, Reynoso was named a Class of 2013 "standout" for her performance in the event.
Piper's Take: "Super active defender with a long reach. She will block shots and cause havoc on defense. Her best basketball is ahead of her."
Reynoso on CCSU: "I chose CCSU because I loved the team and loved the atmosphere of the school itself. I also liked the way the coaching staff at CCSU has developed their big men over the last couple years. This basketball program is a fast growing program, gaining strength every year and I wanted to be a part of that."
The Blue Devils will continue the 2012-13 season tonight at Holy Cross. The Blue Devils and Crusaders will tip-off at 7 p.m.
