Softball Stuns Mount 11-1 in Five Innings, Falls Short in Game One Friday
The Blue Devils ran away with an 11-1 win in game two of Friday's doubleheader at Mount St. Mary's.
After coming up short 1-0 in game one in Emmitsburg, Md. on Friday afternoon, the Central Connecticut softball team responded with a statement, five inning 11-1 victory over Mount St. Mary's in game two. CCSU out-hit the Mountaineers 8-to-3, including hits from six of the nine Blue Devil batters. Leading the offensive field day was rookie Kaleigh Edwards who went 2-for-3 at the plate, including her third double of the season, scored twice, and chipped in three RBI's.
Sophomore pitcher Alex Casañas earned her third straight win and allowed just three hits. The sophomore improves her record to 3-1 on the year. CCSU advances to 9-19 and 4-6 in the NEC, while the Mountaineers move on to 14-21, and 4-2 on the year.
GAME ONE
The Blue Devils came up just short in game one after Mount St. Mary's was able to bring in the game's only run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Juniors Tori Constantin, and Brittany Camara, and freshmen Alicia Bertolino, and Emily Cronin all recorded one hit for Central.
In the fourth inning, Mount's Kaylee Stoner led off with a double to right center, and advanced to third on a wild pitch with one out before being batted in. Trailing 1-0 with three scoring opportunities left, the Blue Devils left four runners on base as game one came to a close.
Junior pitcher, Emily Sargent went all six innings and struck out three, turning her record over to 5-15 this season.
GAME TWO
In the first inning of the second game of Friday's doubleheader, CCSU tabbed three runs off of a single from freshman Sarah Ogilvie, and junior Brittany McNulla, as well as a double from Edwards. In Central next appearance at the plate, junior Alexis Debrosse launched a two-run jack (fourth this year) to left field that scored Bertolino, putting The Mount behind 4-0 in the second.
The Mountaineers would respond in the bottom of the same inning with the only run they would earn on the day, off of a solo homer from Morgan Alisauckas.
In the fourth inning after Constantin opened up with a double to right center, CCSU would go on to score six runs in an impressive two-out rally. Sophomore right fielder, Kerri Dadalski and Edwards both rocketed a couple of two-run singles to right field, and Ogilvie notched her sixth double of the season.
Out in the control with a 10 run cushion, Casañas held Mount St. Mary's hitless in it's final two chances at a comeback, ending the match in five innings.
CCSU plays again tomorrow, April 15th, at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, NY against the Manhattan Jaspers for a Saturday doubleheader at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.
