Softball Falls in Doubleheader to Yale
The Blue Devils will play a doubleheader against Albany on Saturday.
The Central Connecticut softball team was done in by a pair of big innings by Yale in falling in a doubleheader on Thursday afternoon at CCSU Softball Field. A seven-run fifth inning lifted the Bulldogs in game one, 7-5, and a five-run fourth inning was the difference in Yale's 6-3 win in game two. The Blue Devils hosted the games, but Yale was the designated home team as the doubleheader was originally scheduled to be at their home field.
The losses drop Central's record to 2-12 on the season, while Yale improves to 4-16 overall.
GAME 1: Yale 7, CCSU 5
Central built an early three-run lead in the opening game of the day before the Bulldogs exploded with a seven-run inning to take the first game.
Junior Brittany McNulla got the Blue Devils on the scoreboard with a two-out homerun to left field in the top of the first inning.
Central tacked on two runs in the top of the fifth. Sophomore Kerri Dadalski led off with a double. With one out, junior Brittany Camara hit a homerun down the right field line to make it 3-0 for CCSU.
Yale did not have a hit through the first four innings, but exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Bulldogs would take advantage of an error by CCSU enroute to tallying seven hits and going through the order in the inning. Camile Weisenbach and Madison Sack each recorded two hits and an RBI in the inning.
The Blue Devils would attempt to rally, pushing across two runs in the top of the seventh. Sophomore Kaitlin Paterson hit a one-out double and Camara followed with a single. Following a strikeout, freshman Kaleigh Edwards doubled in Paterson to make it 7-4. Junior Alexis Debrosse followed with a single to drive in Camara and make it 7-5, but the Bulldogs would get a fly ball to end the game.
Junior Emily Sargent threw for Central and took the loss. She allowed three earned runs on seven hits with a walk and a strikeout.
Camara finished with two hits, two runs scored and two runs batted in to pace CCSU at the plate.
Terra Jerpbak recorded 10 strikeouts for Yale and earned the win in the circle. Weisenbach and Sack each had two hits for the Bulldogs.
GAME 2: Yale 6, CCSU 3
The Bulldogs used a five-run fourth inning to pick up the win in game two.
Yale picked up a run in the bottom of the first inning, taking advantage of an error to lead off. Weisenbach singled through the right side to drive in Shelby Kennedy.
The Blue Devils would level the score with a run in the top of the third inning. Debrosse singled to lead off and moved around to third base before scoring on a sacrifice fly by McNulla to make it 1-1.
The Bulldogs would break the deadlock in the bottom of the fourth with five runs. Allison Skinner would hit a two-run homerun and Francesca Casalino would hit a three-run double to put Yale in front 6-1.
Central would get a run in the fifth on an RBI-double by McNulla and another run in the sixth on an RBI-double by Edwards to make it 6-3. The Blue Devils would not be able to rally, however, going down in order in the seventh.
Sophomore Alex Casanas started for CCSU and took the loss going 3.2 innings. Debrosse, McNulla and Edwards each collected two hits for the Blue Devils.
Casalino got the win for Yale, collectecting nine strikeouts and allowing just two runs. She also had three hits and three RBIs at the plate.
The Blue Devils will host Albany in a doubleheader on Saturday at CCSU Softball Field. The first game is slated for 1:00 p.m.
