Blue Devils Fall 90-80 at Brown
Senior Ken Horton scores 30 and adds season-high 15 rebounds
Four Brown University players scored in double figures, and the Bears rode a big second half to top the Central Connecticut men's basketball team 90-80 on Saturday afternoon.
The loss is the second straight for the Blue Devils, who fall to 5-4 overall on the season.
The Blue Devils were led by senior Ken Horton who scored a game-high 30 points, while adding a season-high 15 rebounds for his second double-double of the season and the 20th of his career. Freshman Kyle Vinales added 28 points in the loss, 23 coming in the second half.
Brown, now 5-7 on the season, shot 68 percent from the field (17-of-25) in the second half, erasing a six-point halftime deficit leading by as many as 17 after halftime.
Central led 18-6 with 12:13 left in the first, following the second basket of the game from senior Robby Ptacek. Freshman Malcolm McMillan had five early points as the Blue Devils hit 8-of-14 from the field to start the game.
An 18-10 run for the Bears, led by 13 points from Stephen Albrecht, cut the lead to 28-24 with under four minutes to play in the half.
Central led 35-29 at the half, led by 19 from Horton. He scored the final 15 points of the half for the Blue Devils, including a pair of threes. The Blue Devil forced 10 Brown turnovers in the first 20 minutes, leading to 11 points. They outrebounded the Bears 18-14, including six from Horton, and seven offensive boards.
Vinales hit a pair of threes to open the half, and Central led 44-35. The Bears went on a 12-0 run, and took a 47-44 lead with 13:06 to play. It was their first lead of the game as the Blue Devils went more than three minutes without a basket. Central would never regain the lead. They started just 3-of-13 to begin the second half. All three baskets were threes.
The Brown run reached 33-7 and they led 68-51 with under seven to play in the second half. The Bears hit 14 of their first 21 shots from the field in the half, including 8-of-10 from three.
A three from freshman Adonis Burbage cut it to 68-54. Vinales hit his fourth three of the half to make it 71-59.
The Blue Devils would not get closer than 10 the rest of the way, as the Bears hit 18-of-23 free-throws in the half, and scored 61 second half points. They finished 9-of-12 from three in the half, and 14-of-21 from three in the game.
Horton scored 30 and grabbed 15 rebounds, just one off his career-high. Vinales added 28. McMillan had five points and seven assists, to go along with only a pair of turnovers. Central had 16 assists and just nine turnovers, but shot only 30-of-72 from the field. They hit 14-of-29 threes, a season-high, but only 16-of-43 inside three in the game.
Horton's 30 points put him at 1,645 for his career, moving past Hall-of Famer Rick Mickens to fifth on the all-time scoring list. Mickens had 1,632. Up next is Bill Reaves, who has 1,647. Horton is 90 points away from becoming the school's all-time leading scorer.
The Blue Devils will be off until next Saturday, December 17, when they play on the road at Northwestern.
