Football Ends Spring With Annual Blue-White Scrimmage
CCSU will open the 2016 season on Sept. 2 at home vs. Lafayette
Third-year head coach Pete Rossomando and the Central Connecticut football team finished the 2016 spring season on Saturday morning with the annual Blue-White Scrimmage on Arute Field. The game featured the offense (Blue Team) vs. the defense (White Team) and used a modified scoring system.
The offense topped the defense 47-25 on the day, highlighted by a pair of touchdowns from freshman quarterback Tanner Kingsley. Kinglsey finished the game 20-of-28 for 182 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for 17 yards and a score. Freshman Jacob Dolegala, who played in 11 games in his freshman season a year ago, was 13-of-20 for 174 yards and a touchdown. He helped produce the longest play of the day, a 52-yard completion to classmate Trey Hodge.
The defense was effective in a difficult format for them to score points on the field. They produced six sacks (12 total points) and had a pair of deflections, while forcing four 3-and-outs (eight points). They narrowly missed a pair of interceptions and held the offense to just three touchdowns on the day.
Two of the three touchdowns came from Kingsley's offensive unit, including one on the final play of the game when he ran it in from one yard out. His first touchdown of the game came on a 25-yard pass to sophomore running back Devon Lofton.
The lone touchdown of the game from Dolegala's offensive unit came on an 18-yard pass play to sophomore Joey Fields. It came just after the long play to Hodge, as the drive accounted for 10 total points, including two for a play of 20+ yards.
Junior placekicker Ed Groth was good on his only field goal attempt of the day, hitting from 35-yards out.
The Blue Devils did not kickoff or punt during the game. Quarterbacks were not live during the game, which lasted about 90 minutes as the Blue Devils got in between 90-100 plays.
The game's scoring rules consisted of the following:
Touchdown (offense or defense): 6 pts.
Field goal (offense)/Missed FG (defense): 3 pts.
Turnover (defense): 3 pts.
2 pt conv (offense): Failed 2 pt (defense): 2 pts.
