Senior Ronea Saunders of the Central Connecticut women's indoor track and field team was named the Northeast Conference Field Athlete of the Week on Tuesday.
Senior Ronea Saunders of the Central Connecticut women's indoor track and field team was named the Northeast Conference Women's Field Athlete of the Week, the league announced Tuesday afternoon. Saunders cleared a season-best height in the high jump and retained her NEC lead in the event as a result this past Friday at the BU John Thomas Terrier Classic.
Saunders, a Wallingford, CT native, cleared 1.75 meters (5' 8.75") on her final attempt and was the second-best collegiate finisher at the BU Terrier Invitational. The height is five centimeters better than the qualifying standard for the ECAC Championships and gives Saunders a two-centimeter lead over LIU Brooklyn's Kyaira Wright-Harmon on the NEC performance list for this season. Saunders is one of just 58 NCAA Division I high-jumpers to clear 1.75 meters so far this season.
Saunders and the women's indoor track and field team will be back in action this weekend on Saturday, Feb. 7 at the Coaches Tribute Meet at the University of Rhode Island.
