The Central Connecticut State University women's soccer team scored six second half goals and defeated Wagner by a score of 8-0 at home on Friday afternoon. Senior Karise Hilt led the Blue Devils with two goals, while senior goalkeeper Caity Casey recorded her third shutout of the season as CCSU remained undefeated in the Northeast Conference with a record of 5-0.
Senior Brittany Emin got the scoring started in the first half when she played a ball down the left side to sophomore Brittany Jackson. Jackson fed it right back to Emin who finished it for her third goal of the season in the 11th minute of play. Junior Lauren Salvia continued the scoring attack by the Blue Devils when she received a cross from the left side of the box from junior Clio Tregear in the 38th minute. Salvia controlled the ball and fired it past Wagner goalkeeper Samantha Schueschner to give Central a 2-0 lead at the half.
CCSU came out firing to start the second period, as senior Leah Blayney left her mark on two goals within two minutes of each other. Just over eight minutes into the second frame, a shot by Blayney was deflected by Schueschner and found the foot of Jackson who put it away to give the Blue Devils a 3-0 lead. Less than two minutes later Blayney found Tregear with a pass across the box. Tregear finished the play to record her fifth goal of the season.
Less than 20 minutes later Central scored two more goals within a span of 1:36. This time it was Hilt who finished both goals. To put CCSU up 5-0 she finished off a free kick by freshman Leanne Hollister that was deflected by junior Erica Celini. Hilt's second score came from a crossing pass by sophomore Jillian Cipriano who recorded her second assist of the season on the play. Celini then got into the scoring action when she fired a shot into the right side netting off an assist from freshman Celine Vitale in the 80th minute. An own goal by the Seahawks wrapped up the scoring in the 89th minute.
The Blue Devil defense was stellar as they let up no shots on goal by Wagner. Casey, although was not needed for any saves in today's game, made a few critical plays coming out of the net to clear the ball. Schueschner finished with seven saves for the Seahawks.
Central improves to 7-6-1 overall and 5-0-0 in the NEC, while Wagner falls to 1-11-2 and 0-5-1 in conference play. The Blue Devils will next play on Sunday October 18 with a 2:00 p.m. home match versus Long Island.
