Volleyball Downs Fairleigh Dickinson in Straight Sets on Friday
Central hosts Sacred Heart on Saturday afternoon.
The Central Connecticut volleyball team made quick work of Fairleigh Dickinson on Friday night, winning 3-0 at Detrick Gymnasium. The Blue Devils got a match-high 12 kills from junior Madelyn Kaprelyan, who also added 11 assists for the double-double. The win improved Central to 4-1 in Northeast Conference play and 7-9 overall. The Blue Devils won by scores of 25-10, 25-17, 25-15.
Central hosts Sacred Heart on Saturday afternoon at 4:00 p.m.
CCSU hit .395 as a team for the match, while holding Fairleigh Dickinson to a .013 percentage as a team. Junior Erin McDermott had 23 assists and six digs, which matched the team-high with seniors Raquel Quirarte and Kaitlyn Kushman. Quirarte added eight kills. Junior Gala Galabova had a team-high three blocks, while Quirarte and sophomores Emma Henderson and Eline van Heijningen each added two blocks.
Central scored the first three points of the match and led throughout the opening game. The Blue Devils only allowed FDU to score consecutive points once and would score the final six points of the game to go ahead 1-0 in the match.
McDermott had two aces during a 5-0 run to open the second game that CCSU led wire-to-wire. The Knights would close within, 11-10, but three straight points would push the CCSU lead back to 14-10. Kushman would serve four straight points to help push the lead to 19-11. Quirarte would serve four straight points, with junior Morgan Woycik posting two kills in the run, to set up set point. A kill by Woycik would close the game, 25-17.
Sophomore Samantha McCreath would serve five points, including two aces, during a 6-0 run for Central in the third game to open the set up. A kill by van Heijningen would put CCSU ahead, 22-12, before Quirarte would close the match out with a kill.
The match was Faculty Appreciation Night and the Blue Devils program hosted a pre-match reception for CCSU faculty in attendance.
