Soccer Alum, DiBernardo Named National JUCO Coach of the Year
Marcus DiBernardo, a CCSU men's soccer alumnus, was honored by the NSCAA last week.
Former Central Connecticut men's soccer player and coach Marcus DiBernardo was named 2011 Junior College Men's Division I National Coach of the Year on January 13th. DiBernardo earns the honor from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America in only his third season in charge of the Monroe College Mustangs.
Prior to coaching, DiBernardo played defender for the Blue Devils from 1990-92. He then moved into a coaching position with the team in 1994.
After successful stints as both a player and an assistant coach, under head coach Shaun Green, DiBernardo moved on to become a successful high school and club coach in Connecticut. His stops included Brandeis, Truman, Platt and Portland high schools.
In 2006, DiBernardo led the Martin Luther King Jr. High School team to the PSAL Boys Soccer Championship.
At Monroe, DiBernarno has built a dominant junior college program that has reached the NJCAA National Tournament the last two seasons and has been ranked #1 in the NSCAA/Continental Tire National Poll.
Current Blue Devil starters Alpha Dioubate, Mamoudou Dioubate and Steven Bailey played under DiBernardo at Monroe before transferring to Central Connecticut.
"We are so proud of what Marcus has achieved in such a short time at Monroe College. He not only produces winning teams, but he has created a culture of respect, discipline and ambition in all his athletes," said Green. "Marcus is a product of the Blue Devil family and we all congratulate him on his prestigious award."
