Men's Basketball Trio Honored by NEC; Jones Earns co-Player of the Week
Jordan Jones was named Northeast Conference Men's Basketball co-Player of the Week on Monday to headline a trio of Central Connecticut honorees. Along with Jones, Kellen Amos and Allan Jeanne-Rose were both named to the league's Prime Performer honor roll.
Jones was instrumental in helping CCSU split a pair of contests last week, which included a win at Atlantic 10 foe, Fordham. The senior guard led CCSU with 20.0 points per game, while shooting .500 overall (13-26) and .600 (3-5) on three-pointers. He was 11-of-12 at the foul line (.917) at foul line and added 3.5 rebounds, 2.5 assits and 3.0 steals. Jones scored a career-high 22 points against Northeastern on Dec. 19 when he shot 3-for-3 on three-pointers and 7-of-13 overall. He added three steals, an assist and a rebound in a narrow setback to the Huskies. He helped spark a 15-3 run to open the second half that gave CCSU a double-digit lead when he contributed five points and a steal. Jones poured in all 18 of his points in the second half in the win at Fordham. He also chipped in team-highs with six rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Jones would score all his points in the final 16:54 of the game, starting with a layup that put CCSU ahead 45-43 and he later scored 8 points during a span of 3:09 when CCSU would build a five-point lead - he had four straight to put CCSU ahead 73-72, before his layup with 0:43 left gave Central a 79-74 lead. The win helped Central end a four-game Fordham win streak in the series.
Amos averaged 18.5 ppg, while shooting 13-of-27 (.481) overall. He added a team-high 5.0 rebounds and played a team-high 33.7 minutes. Amos scored 17 points with a team-high 6 rebounds, and two steals, a block and assist against Northeastern. Amos then scored a season-high 20 points with four rebounds, three assists, two teals and a block at Fordham. He poured in 15 points in the opening half, while his blocked shot came with 2:50 to play and led to a Jones layup to open a quick 6-0 run that put CCSU ahead for good.
Jeanne-Rose averaged 16.0 points and shot .650 (13-of-20) overall and 6-of-6 at foul line to go with 2.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists, and 1.5 blocks. Jeanne-Rose posted his third 20-point game of the season when he scored 21 points on 9-of-14 shooting against Northeastern. He added three rebounds and two blocks. CCSU closes out the non-conference portion of its schedule on Saturday against Saint Elizabeth for Youth Sports Day and Season Ticket Holder Appreciation.
