Football Falls at Albany, 63-34
Sophomore Rob Hollomon and senior Deven Baker both reached milestones in the game.
Sophomore Rob Hollomon became the ninth player in Central Connecticut football history to rush for 1,000 yards in a season, but the Blue Devils fell to Albany, 63-34, in the final game of the 2012 season.
Hollomon finishes the season with 1,104 yards. It is the 12th 1,000-yard season in program history.
Senior Deven Baker caught seven passes to become the sixth player in program history with 100 career receptions. He finishes his career with 105 catches and 13 touchdowns. He had 145 yards and two touchdowns in the game.
The Blue Devils finish the season with a 2-8 record and a 2-5 mark in Northeast Conference play.
Albany got on the board with a two yard touchdown run by Drew Smith with 9:13 left in the first quarter. The touchdown came one play after junior Andrew Clements was sacked and fumbled deep in CCSU territory.
Albany added another rushing touchdown on their next drive to go ahead 14-0, which is how the first quarter ended after the Blue Devils forced Albany to punt on their fourth drive of the game.
The Danes added a third rushing touchdown, the second by Smith, with 7:43 left in the second quarter.
Albany scored again with six minutes remaining in the half. This time on a 58-yard screen pass, which beat the Blue Devil defense that sent multiple blitzers on first down.
Albany added a third rushing touchdown by Smith and returned a fumble for a touchdown to build a 42-0 lead.
The Blue Devils got on the board with a long drive over the final two minutes of the half. Clements found senior Matthew Tyrell for seven yards on first down and then rushed 11 yards for a first down. On the next play, he hit Baker for a 31-yard play, which set CCSU up inside Albany's 20-yard line. A few plays later Clements punched the ball in from the one yard line for his sixth touchdown of the season and the team's first score of the day.
Albany outgained the Blue Devils 284 to 143 in total offense during the first half.
Albany opened the second half with a 79-yard kickoff return touchdown by Kevin Chillis.
On the ensuing CCSU possession, the Blue Devil drive appeared to stall, but senior D.J. Radich took a direct snap and converted a first down on a punt fake. Hollomon rushed to the one yard line and Clements again punched the ball across the goal line for a one yard touchdown run.
Following a rushing touchdown and a fumble return touchdown that put the Danes ahead 63-14, the Blue Devils responded with Clements hitting Baker for a 57-yard touchdown pass on the first play of the fourth quarter.
The Blue Devils added a fourth touchdown in the fourth quarter as junior Chuck Watson intercepted a tipped pass and returned it 70 yards for a score. CCSU went for two after the score and failed to convert.
Central closed out the scoring on a touchdown pass to Baker. The ensuing extra-point was good by senior Juan Duque, which set the final score at 63-34.
Junior Chris Linares had his second interception of the season on a deep pass in the third quarter.
Hollomon finished the game with 111 yards on 21 attempts. It is his fifth straight 100-yard rushing game. Over the final five games of the season, Hollomon rushed for 803 total yards.
