Standout freshman Maddy Garber of the Central Connecticut swimming and diving team was named the Corvias ECAC Division I New England Swimmer of the Week on Wednesday afternoon. The Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) recognized Garber after she helped lead the Blue Devils to a 162-138 victory over NEC foe Wagner last Saturday. The rookie contributed 29 points towards Central's final score over three events.
Garber, a Milford, Massachussets product, was a perfect three-for-three, taking gold in the three different events she swam in at the meet last Saturday. Garber accompanied three other Blue Devil swimmers in the first event of the day, the 200 yard medley relay, and started the meet off on a high note. Garber swam the second leg of the race and the team finished with a time of 1:46.70 to take gold and set a new Jack Suydam Natatorium pool record.
Garber was not done setting records on the day, however, and individually set the new Jack Suydam Natatorium pool standard in the 200 yard breaststroke. She touched the wall with a time of 2:20.57, which was almost six seconds faster than the second place finisher, to take gold and set the record. Garber also picked up her third gold medal of the day in the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 1:04.99, over a second faster than the second place swimmer.
Garber has now been a part of seven different CCSU records in her rookie campaign.

This is the third time this season Garber has been honored by the ECAC, but the first time she has picked up the Swimmer of the Week award. She had previously been tabbed the ECAC Rookie of the Week twice, on Jan. 7 and Dec. 11.
Garber and the Blue Devils will look to use the momentum with the win over Wagner as they return to action with the NEC Championships Feb. 25-28. The championships will be held at MIT in Boston, MA.
