Freshman Maddy Garber and senior Kaitlyn Dwyer were recognized by the Northeast Conference for their performances in the the pool and off the diving board this past Saturday against NEC foe Wagner. Garber was tabbed the NEC Swimmer of the Week and Dwyer earned NEC Diver of the Week honors, the league office announced Tuesday afternoon. The Blue Devils defeated Wagner on Saturday 162-138.
Garber, a standout freshman who is having an outstanding season for the Blue Devils, concluded the regular season in record breaking fashion for Central Connecticut. Garber went a perfect three-for-three, taking gold in the three different events she swam in at the NEC dual meet.
Garber started the day swimming the second leg of the Blue Devil's 200 yard medley relay team that took gold with a pool record time of 1:46.70 at Jack Suydam Natatorium. Garber further etched her name in the record books by setting another pool mark in the 200 yard breaststroke with a time of 2:20.57, winning by over five seconds. The Milford, Massachussets native concluded her day with a win in the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 1:04.99.
Dwyer also had a record-setting day for the Blue Devils this past Saturday, but for Dwyer it came from the diving board. The senior picked up a pair of victories and 18 points for the Blue Devils in the 162-138 win over Wagner. Dwyer took gold from the 3-meter board with a huge score of 264.75, over 38 points better then the second place diver. Her score also broke the school record that had previously stood for 11 years set by Juliana Diplacido in 2004 (262.05). Dwyer posted her second diving victory of the day with a score of 225.68 in six dive attempts from the 1-meter board, edging Wagner's Erica Curry by 3.60 points to earn the gold.
Garber and Dwyer are not new to winning NEC weekly awards this season. This is the fourth time Garber has been named NEC Swimmer of the Week and the third time Dwyer has been tabbed NEC Diver of the Week.
The Blue Devils will look to use the momentum with the win over Wagner as they return to action with the NEC Championships Feb. 25-28. The championships will be held at MIT in Boston, MA.
