Garber Takes Bronze In 100 Breaststroke, CCSU 9th At Rutgers
The Blue Devils are currently in ninth place after day two of competition at the Frank Elm Invitational at Rutgers University. Freshman Maddy Garber placed third in the 100 yard breaststroke.
The Central Connecticut swimming and diving team completed day two of the Frank Elm Invitational hosted by Rutgers University on Saturday. The Blue Devils dropped to ninth place out of twelve teams at the three day meet and currently have 419.5 total team points. Central was led by freshman Maddy Garber and senior Helene Neuhaus on day two of competition.
Garber earned a bronze medal in the 100 yard breaststroke and picked up 27 points for her team as she touched the wall third overall with a time of 1:03.13. Her time sets a new CCSU freshman record in the 100 breaststroke previously held by Kristina Gulia (1:05.14 – 2011). This is now Garber's second freshman record she has broken this season and she is also a member of the 400 yard medley relay team that broke the CCSU team record yesterday on day one of the Frank Elm Invitational.
Neuhaus, also a member of the record breaking 400 yard medley relay team, led the Blue Devils in the 100 yard backstroke finals. Neuhaus finished sixth overall with a time of 57.37 and added 24 points to the Blue Devils' total score. Sophomore Lisa Ward earned nine points for her team in the same event as she finished 17th with a time of 1:05.94.
Sophomore Sabree Thomas had an excellent performance in the 100 yard butterfly on day two of competition. Thomas finished 14th and picked up 13 points for CCSU when she touched the wall with a time of 57.58.
In the 400 IM sophomore Stephanie Czulewicz finished 23rd overall to record the best finish in that event for CCSU with a time of 4:42.90. Her effort added two points towards the Blue Devils team score.
The 400 yard medley team from yesterday's competition was at it again on day two, this time in the 200 yard medley relay. Neuhaus, Garber, Thomas and sophomore Christine Rasile finished eighth with a time of 1:45.66, just 22 tenths of a second away from setting another CCSU team record. The team helped pick up 44 points toward the Blue Devils team score at the Invitational.
Senior Kaitlyn Dwyer led the Blue Devils from the diving board on the day in the 1-meter diving finals. Dwyer was the only Blue Devil to qualify for the finals and she finished 14th overall with a score of 200.95 in her six dive attempts. Her effort added 13 points to the CCSU team score.
Northeastern University remains in the lead with a team score of 1,110 points followed by Navy (897), Rutgers (713), Wagner (682) and Idaho (665). LIU Post currently sits in sixth place with 585 points followed by Columbia (468) and James Madison (454). CCSU is ninth with 419.5 points ahead of New Hampshire (264.5), The College of New Jersey and Sacred Heart (46).
The Blue Devils will return to the pool tomorrow for the final day of competition at the Frank Elm Invitational. The preliminary rounds will kick-off again at 10 a.m. followed by finals action starting at 5 p.m. Fans can view the results live here.
