Swim & Dive Sweeps NEC Weekly Awards
Fresman Maddy Garber was named NEC Swimmer of the Week and junior Kaitlyn Beaver was tabbed NEC Diver of the Week after the Blue Devils split a tri-meet at Vermont on Saturday.
The Central Connecticut women's swimming and diving team swept the Northeast Conference weekly awards for this week. Freshman Maddy Garber earned NEC Swimmer of the Week honors and junior Kaitlyn Beaver was tabbed the NEC Diver of the Week, the league announced Tuesday afternoon. These Blue Devils were recognized for their individual performances in a tri-meet that CCSU competed in this past Saturday at Vermont. The Blue Devils defeated Merrimack 247-28, but lost to Vermont 163-130 at the meet.
Garber, a freshman from Milford, Mass., swam to a first place finish in two events and was runner-up in another at the meet. The rookie finished first in both the 200 yard breaststroke and the 200 yard IM. In the 200 breaststroke Garber touched the wall first with a time of 2:22.33. In the 200 IM she earned a gold medal with a time of 2:11.97. Garber's runner-up performance came in the 100 yard breaststroke. She swam the race in 1:05.31, just three tenths of a second behind the gold medalist.
Beaver, a junior from Hamden, Conn., helped lead the Blue Devils from the diving board on Saturday. She finished in the top-five from both boards at the meet. She scored 221.54 points from the 3-meter board, the best score for the Blue Devils so far this season from the 3-meter board, to record a second place finish. From the 1-meter board Beaver finished fourth with a score of 216.74 in her six dive attempts.
The award for Garber is her second NEC Swimmer of the Week award this season. Beaver's Diver of the Week award is the first this season and the second of her career as a Blue Devil.
CCSU will return to action this weekend as they travel to Rutgers for the Frank Elm Invitational. The meet is a three-day event and will take place from Nov. 21-23.
